Bohemian & Saxon Switzerland Day Trip from Prague

A full-day trip from Prague into the twin national parks of Bohemian Switzerland (České Švýcarsko) and Saxon Switzerland (Sächsische Schweiz) — a dramatic landscape of sandstone canyons, table mountains, forested gorges and the winding Elbe river, straddling the Czech–German border. The tour includes two of Europe's most famous rock formations: the Pravčická Brána, the largest natural sandstone arch on the continent, and the Bastei Bridge, a 19th-century stone bridge suspended between towering rock pillars 194 metres above the Elbe.

Why book this tour

  • Two national parks in one day — Bohemian Switzerland (Czech) and Saxon Switzerland (German).
  • Two iconic viewpoints — Pravčická Brána sandstone arch and Bastei Bridge.
  • Live licensed guide with real-time translation into 8 languages (EN, DE, ES, FR, IT, PT, RU, UK).
  • Small groups in an air-conditioned minivan or coach.
  • Central Prague pick-up at Wenceslas Square.

Entry fees not included. Pravčická Brána access fee is paid on site (adult ~145 CZK, current price on the official Bohemian Switzerland National Park website). Bastei Bridge itself is free; parking, ferry and the ruined castle Neurathen are separate.

Lunch stop included, meal not included. Lunch break at a mountain restaurant with panoramic views (Sokolí Hnízdo near Pravčická Brána, or a Saxon restaurant near Bastei); meal paid separately.

What you'll see

  • Pravčická Brána (Prebischtor) — the largest natural sandstone arch in Europe, 26.5 metres wide and 21 metres high. A landmark since the 19th century and the setting of scenes from The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008).
  • Sokolí Hnízdo (Falcon's Nest) — a Neo-Renaissance chateau built in 1881 as a mountain restaurant right at the arch, with spectacular terrace views.
  • Bastei Bridge (Basteibrücke) — a stone bridge built in 1851 spanning the sandstone pinnacles above the Elbe, at 194 metres one of Germany's most famous viewpoints.
  • Neurathen Castle ruins — a medieval rock castle on the Bastei formation, with reconstructed elements accessible via wooden walkways.
  • The Elbe river valley — the drive along the river between the two national parks is one of the most scenic in Central Europe.
  • Sandstone table mountains and gorges throughout — the landscape was carved from what was once the seabed of a Cretaceous sea.

Programme

  • 08:30 — meeting point at Wenceslas Square, next to the statue of St. Wenceslas on horseback (Václavské náměstí, socha sv. Václava). Look for a person with a MegaTour sign.
  • Transfer to Bohemian Switzerland by small-group vehicle (8-seat minivan or 19-seat coach depending on group size) — approx. 1.5 hours by road.
  • Hike to Pravčická Brána — approx. 45-minute uphill walk on a forest path, plus time at the arch itself.
  • Lunch stop at Sokolí Hnízdo or another mountain restaurant with a view; meal paid separately.
  • Border crossing into Germany and drive to Bastei — approx. 45 minutes.
  • Bastei Bridge and viewpoints — walk across the bridge, along the panoramic paths and around the Neurathen castle ruins.
  • Return to Prague. Arrival approx. 10–12 hours after departure.

Fitness and preparation

This is a moderate walking tour with some uphill sections. In total you will walk approximately 5–6 km over the day, including:

  • The 45-minute uphill hike to Pravčická Brána on a forest path (moderate incline, well-marked).
  • The Bastei viewpoint walk — mostly flat once you reach the top, but with stairs and short climbs to individual viewpoints.

Essential: proper walking shoes (trainers or hiking boots), weather-appropriate clothing (layers), water, a light snack. Not suitable for wheelchair or stroller. Not recommended for people with severe knee, hip or cardiovascular problems.

Frequently asked questions

Is this a hike or a bus tour?

It's a hiking day trip. You will walk approximately 5–6 km total, including a 45-minute uphill section to reach the Pravčická Brána arch, and viewpoint walks with stairs at the Bastei. If you prefer a purely scenic tour without walking, this is not the right tour — consider Dresden or Karlovy Vary instead.

Do I need special equipment?

Proper walking shoes (trainers or hiking boots) are essential — no sandals, no heels, no flat city shoes. A rain jacket or windbreaker is smart in most seasons. Bring water and a snack.

Is the tour suitable for children?

Yes, for active children aged 8 and above. Children under 12 pay €70, students €70 (ISIC). Younger children may find the uphill walk to Pravčická Brána too long.

What about seniors?

For visitors who are fit and comfortable with a 45-minute uphill walk, this tour is very rewarding. For those with mobility issues, joint problems or heart conditions, we would recommend Dresden or Karlovy Vary instead.

Do I need a passport?

EU/EEA citizens can travel on a national ID card. Non-EU visitors need a valid passport and Schengen visa if required for their nationality. Carry documents on the day — border checks between Czech Republic and Germany are rare but possible.

What language does the guide speak?

The guide speaks Ukrainian live. Other languages are delivered via personal receiver (WAT01-NG2): English, German, Spanish, French, Italian, Portuguese, Russian.

What if it rains heavily?

Light rain — the tour runs and viewpoints are still spectacular. Heavy rain or storms — we may adjust the itinerary or reschedule for safety reasons. We will contact you the evening before if any change is needed.

Can I combine this with Dresden?

The Bastei is only 30 minutes from Dresden by road. As separate day trips they don't fit on the same day, but we can arrange a longer or multi-day itinerary combining both — ask at booking.

Was this really the filming location for Narnia?

Yes. Parts of The Chronicles of Narnia: Prince Caspian (2008) were filmed in the Bohemian Switzerland area, including scenes near Pravčická Brána.

How do I book?

Contact us via the website form, phone or messenger. We confirm within hours and send the meeting point map, packing list, and receiver language.

We visited Saxon Switzerland with friends and had a great experience. The trip was comfortable and well planned. We enjoyed the guided tour and then had time to explore the city by ourselves. A very nice day outside Prague!
